Speaker: Ana Freire (Universitat Pompeu Fabra)
Ana Freire is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). Previously, she was an associate professor at the University of A Coruña (Spain). Now she is also a researcher in Data Mining Group at Eurecat (Technology Centre of Catalonia).
Ana received her PhD in Computer Science at the University of A Coruña. Her research has been mainly focused on Information Retrieval (IR), by studying the efficiency of large-scale web search engines and by modelling more environmentally-friendly search engines (Green IR). Her research interests also include data mining, social media and biomedical informatics. Her contributions have been published in top IR conferences such as WSDM or SIGIR, and in international journals as well. Some of her work has also being exploited by means of several US patents.
In 2012, she did an internship at The University of Glasgow (United Kingdom), hosted by the Terrier Team (leaded by Iadh Ounis). In this period, she was a finalist of the Google Anita Borg Scholarship. In 2013 she joined the National Research Council of Italy for 4 months, hosted by the High-Performance-Computing Lab (leaded by Raffaele Perego). In 2014, Ana was a visiting researcher at Yahoo Labs Barcelona (Spain) during 3 months.
