Speaker: Oliver Schmitz (Utrecht University, The Netherlands)
Oliver studied computer science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany, and obtained his Diplom (equivalent to MSc) in 2003. He gained first experience with the more applied disciplines of environmental modelling and geocomputation during the 'Environmental Management' study, a master program that he started in Kiel in 2004. In 2006, he moved to the Netherlands to write his master thesis and to start as a junior researcher at the Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University. He obtained his second MSc from Kiel University in 2007, and continued to work in Utrecht as a junior researcher on software tools for model coupling, stochastic modelling, and data assimilation. Integrated modelling became the topic of his PhD research, which he started in autumn 2009 as a joint project between Utrecht University and the Environmental Modelling Unit of the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) in Mol, Belgium. He defended his dissertation in May 2014. Since October 2013, he has been working as a scientific software engineer at the Department of Physical Geography, Utrecht University.
